The city of Darmstadt has imposed a
new communal tax effective from 03 December 2010: the contribution to the promotion of cultural affairs.
This contribution is charged to you as a guest as well as to us, your hosts. According to the city statute we are obliged to pass on the amount of € 1.07 to € 3.21 per room and night (depending on the room rate) to the city of Darmstadt.
This way the city of Darmstadt hopes to reduce its financial deficits. The contribution is supposedly meant to promote and support cultural affairs in Darmstadt. We believe with a firm conviction that this tax will in no way be beneficial to Darmstadt as a cultural location. It will on the contrary hinder competition with other cities and destroy all measures we have taken after the reduction of the VAT rate for accommodation: the creation of new jobs, the renovation of rooms and rate reductions. In other words: We have used this chance to provide you with even better service and the best possible value for money. For all these measures we are now being punished by the city of Darmstadt!
Guests and hoteliers are equally assessable. Therefore we would like to use this chance to inform you on this matter, to apologise for all inconveniences and ask for your understanding and your support.
We have tried to stop this fiscal madness the political way together with our business association DEHOGA Hessen. Unfortunately our appeals were met with little interest on the part of communal politicians. The only measure we have left now is to take legal action. In our opinion this charge is wrong and unfair. We even take it to be strikingly unconstitutional. In our mutual interest we will continue taking all possible steps to contribute to the abolishment of the so-called cultural tax.
Darmstadt’s hotel industry as a whole contributes to the promotion and support of the local economy on a daily basis by creating new jobs and thus enables hospitality and tourism in Darmstadt in the first place. We accept this responsibility and avow ourselves as hosts to this region.
